Nobel Laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer called Rabbi Mlotek’s grandparents, “The Sherlock Holmes of Yiddish Song.” Come explore Jewish history through this rich legacy of Yiddish song with a particular focus on pre-World War II Eastern European life. Songs of workers, family life, romance, politics and Judaism paint a vibrant life of what Jewish life looked like before the horrors of the Holocaust.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Rabbi Avram Mlotek is the co-founder of Base Hillel and serves as rabbi for its DWTN location. Base Hillel is a growing movement of rabbinic couples who use their homes as convening points for Jewish life centered upon hospitality, learning, and service now in nine cities. Mlotek graduated cum laude from Brandeis University majoring in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and has studied at Sarah Lawrence College, Yeshiva University’s Cantorial School and City College’s Educational Theatre department. A native Yiddish speaker, Mlotek’s Yiddish cultural work has brought him to China, Ethiopia, Israel, Romania, Sweden and Australia. Prior to joining Base, Avram served as a rabbi in training at The Carlebach Shul in Manhattan, The Hebrew Institute of Riverdale and Hunter College Hillel. He completed units of clinical pastoral education at the Jewish Theological Seminary where he served as chaplain for hospice patients at Ft. Karpas and homeless seniors at the Educational Alliance. Mlotek’s writing has appeared in The Forward, Tablet, Haaretz, The Jerusalem Post, The Jewish Week, The Huffington Post and Kveller, a Jewish parenting blog, where he is regularly featured. In 2012 The New York Jewish Week selected him as a “leading innovator in Jewish life today” as part of their “36 Under 36” section. In May 2016, Mlotek was listed as one of America’s “Most Inspiring Rabbis” by The Jewish Daily Forward.
